Wheelchairs for Kids magnificent milestone

For over 20 years Ullrich Aluminium in Perth has supported the charity ‘Wheelchairs For Kids’ and they have just celebrated a huge milestone.

The charity is a Scarborough Rotary Initiative and has just produced its 50,000th wheelchair.

As an entirely volunteer-based project, Wheelchairs for Kids is dedicated to providing free wheelchairs to children in need.

The wheelchairs are delivered to kids in need in war-torn countries so they can get up off the dirt and regain their mobility to get around, attend school and allow them to contribute more to their families and their communities who will rely on them into the future.

Scarborough Rotary Club founded the charity project back in 1998, making wheelchairs from old bike frames with a wooden base.

Over 22 years and 9 different models later, a world-class design has been developed, which totally conforms to World Health Organisation standards and is constantly tested for strength on equipment specifically designed, built and provided by the Engineering Department at the University of Western Australia.

And better still, the new model is manufactured in the Wheelchairs for Kids factory in Wangara, Perth.

Perth Ullrich Aluminium Branch Manager Gareth Milford said the branch has had an association with the charity longer than he has been at the branch, and that is over 18 years.

Gareth adds, “Ullrich Aluminium has supported Wheelchairs For Kids since the charity began in 1998. It is really amazing to support a program that has changed many people’s lives in war-torn communities around the world.”

“Our Ullrich branch provides a range of aluminium components in the production of the wheelchairs. It is extremely satisfying to see how our products are made into such life-changing pieces of equipment,” Gareth adds.

The 50,000th wheelchair rolled off the production line on 27 October 2021.

To mark the occasion, Wheelchairs For Kids hosted a special event at their factory. West Australia Premier Mark McGowan attended the event acknowledging the amazing success of the Scarborough Rotary initiative.
